Camp Alert: 'Hairspray' Sequel, A 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' Remake

Everyone wants to see John Travolta in drag via a fat suit again, right? (then again it might of just been his normal weight these days. New Line has somehow convinced “Hairspray” creator John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to the musical which was the big hit in the summer of 2007. Oh wait, we know how they convinced him: cash. Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will pen new tunes for the flick. [Variety]

Another remake, ugh. This is a morning of bad ideas. MTV Films is planing on reharvesting the 1970s camp classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Will you hear Meatloaf’s melodramatic caterwauling in this thing or least versions of his song? Maybe yes, maybe no. This new version many also feature music “not featured in the original.” Someone’s going to flip over that (not us). MTV hopes to to have the film ready for Halloween 2009. The original film, which starred Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf, has grossed $140 million since 1975 thanks to the ritual of midnight screenings and ironic drama students round the country. [Variety]

Camp of another variety. Remember the cheesy musical, “Repo: The Genetic Opera” that stars Paris Hilton and Paul Sorvino? Directed by zero-times Oscar nominated “Saw” director Darren Lynn Bousman, the futuristic “musical thriller,” is about an epidemic of organ failure that essentially leads to the purchase of body parts and thus default procedures, including organ repossession. Well, the film also stars a member of the seminal Canadian industrial band Skinny Puppy, Nivek Ogre. The film was supposed to come out in the spring, but now hits theaters November 7. Note quite camp. Katharine McPhee has recorded a cover of ’80s tune, “I Know What Boys Like” by the Waitresses for her upcoming comedy, “The House Bunny” starring Anna Faris. [MTV]

Perhaps just ironic. Will Lindsay Lohan appear on Lily Allen’s next record? [Pitchfork]
