The open secret about Canadians and Netflix is that many customers hack their browsers to make their IP address look like it’s originating from the United States, so they can access the much larger library of content, versus the rather slim pickings available north of the border. But next year might see the reverse happen when "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits home video.
Variety reveals that Canada will be the only territory in the world where ‘The Force Awakens’ will be available to stream on Netflix. Why? Well, the reasons are mostly pretty boring, but it comes down to licensing. Starz still has a deal to distribute all Disney titles released through the end of 2015, however, Netflix picked up the rights to mouse house product starting in 2015, but only in Canada.
So be prepared to tweak your browser or maybe take a vacation (Montreal is lovely in the summer) when ‘The Force Awakens’ starts streaming in 2016.
