We sort of hate the phrase “you’re doing it wrong,” but really, if you didn’t watch Jane Campion‘s “Top Of The Lake” starring Elisabeth Moss, you were sorely, sorely doing it wrong. Co-directed with Garth Davis (“Lion“), season one centered on a young, pregnant 12-year-old girl who suddenly goes missing. Investigating the disappearance of the girl, Detective Robin Griffin (Moss) found herself knee-deep in small-town secrets in New Zealand.

“Top Of The Lake: China Girl,” the title of season two, takes place four years later, after Griffin has returned to her native Australia and then finds herself in an investigation of a dead girl who washes up on a local beach.
Synopsis removed at request of the Cannes Film Festival
Ariel Kleiman (“Partisan“) co-directed the new season with Campion instead of Davis, and it will feature Nicole Kidman, Fayssal Bazzi, Alice Englert (Campion’s daughter), Igor Breakenback, Gwendoline Christie, David Dencik, and Ewen Leslie in the cast.
The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 17-28, and they’ll be debuting all seven episodes, which run for just under six hours.
