Cannes Trailers: Kim Ki-Duk's 'Arirang,' Midnight Movie 'Days Of Grace' & Animated Biopic 'Tatsumi'

Yes, we know, more sneak peeks at what’s coming up at the Cannes Film Festival. But sit back and take a look at what cinephiles will be screening starting tomorrow.

Korean director Kim Ki-duk, perhaps best known on our shores for his arthouse fare like “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring” and “3-Iron” hits the festival with his latest “Arirang.” And it looks…interesting. Shaken by an incident on the set of his last movie “Dream” in which an actress was nearly in a fatal accident, Ki-duk takes a look at his fifteen year career and how despite his success, personally, he wasn’t happy or fulfilled at all. And as the trailer bears out, this looks like it will be pretty intense.

While Midnight Movies are more associated with fests like SXSW, Fantasia or TIFF, Cannes does have a couple of them each year, and “Days Of Grace” has landed one of the coveted spots and it looks very strong. Directed by Everado Gout, this Mexico-set thriller takes place over three World Cups — in 2002, 2006 and 2010 — and centers on “A cop. A hostage. A wife. Corruption, violence, vengeance. Three destinies, during 30 days, during three Soccer World Cups. Three ways to fight in order to survive.” We’ll be tired, but dammit, we’ll be there to check this out; the trailer is a crackling, nervy winner. And warning before you watch, its slightly NSFW — there are some boobs, very briefly.

Finally, Eric Khoo tackles the life and work of Japanese comics artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi in the animated biopic “Tatsumi.” It’s looks to be a pretty charming little film about a man who practically invented the idea of manga as we know it today. On the surface, it looks to be fairly straightforward but slotted into the Un Certain Regard category, there could be much, much more than meets than eye with this pic.
