Here’s a semi-interesting twist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, its upcoming “Captain Marvel” film will be set in the 1990s essentially making it a prequel to every MCU film thus far, which began with “Iron Man” in 2007. The reasoning for this is unclear for now, though fan theories are already sprouting. At San Diego Comic Con yesterday several key details were revealed.
The character Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel to be played by Brie Larson will be officially joined by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the movie. And because the film is set at least seventeen years before the events of “Iron Man,” Fury will have the use of both his eyes. Perhaps the films will finally reveal how he became the one-eyed S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. The time period raises an interesting question about aging; Samuel L. Jackson is 68 years old. And while his ass is still beautiful, one images there’s going to be a lot of make-up and or that kind of de-aging CGI used in “Ant-Man” to make Hank Pym look much younger.
Secondly, new concept art of the film, which included a depiction of Brie Larson wearing the Captain Marvel costume, revealed the villains of the film: the Skrulls, alien creatures who have long been a staple of antagonists in the Marvel comic book universe often fighting the Fantastic Four and The Avengers. Here’s how a Marvel Wikia explains the Skrulls.
The Skrulls are an extraterrestrial humanoid race who have created a vast interstellar empire, the oldest known empire still in existence, within the Andromeda Galaxy. The Skrull-race began on the planet Skrullos in the Drox System hundreds of millions of years ago.

While there’s no on-the-surface connection to Thanos, as a dominant alien force in the galaxy, one can speculate this might be a way wherein Marvel enters the MCU and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Then again, we now know Nick Fury has known about Captain Marvel all along so how that information fits into all of this remains to be seen. The extra-terrestrial element to the movie suggests Marvel could be a kind of bridge between the terrestrial world of “The Avengers,” and the more galactic space odyssey milieu of “Guardians Of The Galaxy.” One also presumes, given Marvel won’t show up in the current Marvel timeline for around 20 years, she’ll have some sort of agelessness to her powers. But the question remains: where’s she been for nearly two decades all this time?
Perhaps more importantly, Captain Marvel is rumored to make her debut in next year’s “Avengers: Infinity War.” While that appearance is not confirmed, perhaps this is why her first solo movie will be a prequel to those events, additionally notable because Marvel’s never made a prequel before.
“Captain Marvel” will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (“Half Nelson,” “Mississippi Grind”) and has been written by Meg LeFauve (“Inside Out,” “The Good Dinosaur”) and Nicole Perlman (“Guardians Of The Galaxy”). No story details have yet to be revealed, nor has any information regarding the rest of the cast. All will be revealed in due time, I’m sure. In the meantime, mark your calendar as “Captain Marvel” flies into theaters March 8, 2019.
