With the fall film festival season in full swing and Netflix landing at Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and New York City with a loaded lineup of prestige films that could be vying for awards consideration, it’s difficult to start thinking about the future. There’s so much on our plate right now, how can we possibly think about the prestige flicks that are surely coming down the pipeline in 2020? Well, with the upcoming film “Dig,” we definitely need to pay attention, as Netflix has put together a great pair of actors for what is surely going to be a film that will garner some buzz in the future.
According to THR, Netflix has teamed up with director Simon Stone for the upcoming drama “Dig.” And Stone has brought on actors Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes to bring this true story to life. “Dig” tells the story of a post-World War II widow (Mulligan) that has a hunch that the land she owns has something special buried underground. And she’s right. Fiennes plays a local archeologist that finds himself being pushed out of the dig, as museum curators take over the project.
Stone’s film was originally supposed to come from BBC Films, with Nicole Kidman attached to star opposite Fiennes. However, when that project fell apart, Kidman departed with Netflix and Mulligan boarding.
Mulligan is an Oscar-nominated actress, best known for her roles in films like “An Education,” “Drive,” and “The Great Gatsby.” Most recently, she starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in the acclaimed film “Wildlife,” which was the directorial debut for actor Paul Dano.
Fiennes is one of those actors that is constantly showing up in films. He’s been nominated for two Oscars for work in “Schindler’s List” and “The English Patient.” Fiennes is currently seen in the recently released film “Official Secrets.” He’ll next appear in “The King’s Man,” which is the prequel to the popular ‘Kingsman’ superspy franchise.
No release date has been set for “Dig.”
