When you look at the premise for Amazon’s upcoming Prime Video series “Carnival Row,” you wouldn’t be wrong to think that this would have been the perfect project for Guillermo del Toro. And that’s because the early days of the project featured del Toro as a director, writer, and producer on the series. Sadly, del Toro doesn’t seem to be involved in the new series any longer, but judging by the first teaser, his influence looks to be there, still.
“Carnival Row” tells the story of a Victorian fantasy world where mythological creatures have immigrated from their homes, and humans are not big fans of the new cohabitants. The first teaser gives us a look at Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, who play a human detective and a faerie, who appear to be at the center of the series, as their dangerous affair goes against the laws that say that humans and the immigrants shouldn’t co-mingle. Then the world is thrown into chaos after a string of murders.
Originally conceived as a series by del Toro, René Echevarria, and Travis Beacham, only the latter two people are still involved as the series makes its way to TV screens and wherever you stream later this summer.
Joining Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne in the cast are David Gyasi, Karla Crome, Indira Varma, Tamzin Merchant, Simon McBurney, Alice Krige, and Jared Harris.
“Carnival Row” is set to be released by Amazon on August 30.
Here’s the synopsis:
Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne star in Carnival Row, a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures. Feared by humans, they are forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective and a faerie rekindle a dangerous affair. The city’s uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals a monster no one could imagine.
