There was probably a better time for this to be announced, and it’s likely the folks behind this project preferred to wait, but it’s representative of how Hollywood — even in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein — is slow to change.
Last year’s Best Actor Oscar winner Casey Affleck — who was involved in two sexual harassment suits that were later settled, and does not have a fan in Brie Larson — is attached to a brewing TV project from Alfonso Cuaron. Deadline reports that the brewing series is about will follow the origins of a cult, with Affleck starring, and Cuaron writing and directing, but that’s about all the information that’s available at the moment.
Anonymous Content is currently pitching project, but I would imagine it’s still a while off. Cuaron is still in post-production on his next film, “Roma,” which isn’t due for release until next year and it sounds like he’s still got a lot of work to do on it. “Because of the nature of what I did, it’s a very long post production,” he recently told Variety. “We’ve been working on the post-production of that film for months now. It has to do with dynamics of ambitions and finance in terms of windows of opportunity that we can find throughout the months.”
That’s a mouthful, but it kind of sounds like, Cuaron is once again raising the bar for himself, while his team figure out the best place to position the picture commercially and critically (probably a Cannes premiere is my guess).
At any rate, we’ll see how the Affleck/Cuaron collaboration develops, particularly as Hollywood continues to hold itself to the idea of doing better.
