Casting: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Eyes Oliver Stone's Edward Snowden Film, Matt Damon Climbs 'Great Wall' And More

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Matt DamonUpdate 10/8: Deadline reports Gordon-Levitt is now officially attached. Earlier this year it was reported that Oliver Stone would be directing a movie about whistleblower Edward Snowden, and now it appears he may have found his lead. Handsome dude Joseph Gordon-Levitt is being eyed to play the pale, bookish computer nerd in Stone’s movie. Nothing is solid yet, but JGL just wrapped "The Walk" with Robert Zemeckis and presumably has a free schedule ahead, and with Stone eyeing a December start for his movie, it could work out. But it’s likely to be a film that will pack a powder keg of controversy, so we’ll see if the actor will want to go along for the ride. [Deadline]

With another Bourne movie brewing, though its status and when it might shoot are still unknown, Matt Damon is keeping an eye on other gigs. And right now he’s taking a look at Zhang Yimou‘s "The Great Wall." The long-in-the works movie — at one time set up with Ed Zwick to direct Henry Cavill and Benjamin Walker — now has a new draft of the script by Tony Gilroy (Damon’s Bourne movies, "Michael Clayton"), but it’ll come down to scheduling if the actor comes aboard. He’s got Ridley Scott‘s "The Martian" and Kenneth Lonergan‘s "Manchester-by-the-Sea" on deck. [Deadline]

Anthony Hopkins is stepping back into the thriller game with "Go With Me." Daniel Alfredson, whom he worked with on "Kidnapping Freddy Heineken," will direct the movie about "a young woman who returns to her hometown in the Pacific Northwest only to be harassed by an ex-cop turned crimelord named Blackway. Forsaken by the locals and advised to leave town by the local sheriff, she instead turns to an ex-logger (Hopkins) and his sidekick to help her fight back against her sociopathic stalker." The movie is based on the book by Castle Freeman Jr. and the script was written by "Magic Mike XXL" director Greg Jacobs and his "Red Oaks" co-writer Joe Gangemi. [Deadline]

Some kids you never heard of — Oakes Fegley and Oona Laurence — will star in the David Lowery ("Ain’t Them Bodies Saints") -directed remake of “Pete’s Dragon” for Disney. This will be a "reinvention" of the 1970s musical, but will drop those pesky songs. [Variety]
