Cate Blanchett To Play The Evil Stepmother In Mark Romanek's Live Action 'Cinderella'

nullFirst Angelina Jolie as the Queen in "Maleficent," and now Cate Blanchett in "Cinderella"? Well, one thing is clear—Disney is hoping these high profile actresses can be the big draw in the reimaginings of their classic titles.

The Wrap is reporting that Blanchett is in negotiations to play the evil stepmother in Mark Romanek's brewing "Cinderella" movie. Word around the movie has been quiet thus far, with Romanek signing in August 2011, and the last update we had was earlier this year when Chris Weitz came aboard to do rewrites on the first draft by Aline Brosh McKenna ("The Devil Wears Prada"). Details on the movie are scarce, but it will be a live action take on the classic story, with the tale following a prince who is being groomed for a politically arranged marriage, but the plan comes undone when he meets Cinderella.

However, this probably isn't going in front of cameras anytime soon if Blanchett's casting is anything to go by. The actress pretty much has the first half of 2013 booked up, shooting George Clooney's "The Monuments Men" in the spring, before (presumably) returning for additional filming in the summer for "The Hobbit: There and Back Again." But then again, this movie isn't even on the Disney calendar yet, so we wouldn't expect it in theaters until 2015 anyway. But nabbing the actress is a good first start for the movie, and certainly ups our interest.
