For years now, there have been talks about a “True Lies” sequel coming eventually. The James Cameron-directed film is a classic ‘90s action film that has incredible spectacle, a charming cast (perhaps even Arnold Schwarzenegger’s best performance from that era), and a solid story. And over the years, people have been clamoring for some sort of continuation. Well, a sequel doesn’t look like it’s going to happen, but the long-in-development TV remake seems to be moving along.
According to Deadline, CBS is moving forward with a pilot order for the “True Lies” TV remake from writer Matt Nix and director McG. And yes, James Cameron is on board as a producer. Much like the film, the series will tell the story of a suburban housewife that is shocked to find out that her nerdy husband is actually a CIA operative. The woman then sees her life flipped on its head when she is dragged into the life of a spy.
As mentioned, the series comes from writer Matt Nix, who is best known as the creator of the fan-favorite series, “Burn Notice.” McG, who is probably best known as the filmmaker behind the “Charlie’s Angels” features from the ‘00s and “Terminator: Salvation,” is on board to direct the pilot. James Cameron, who is busy working on a dozen or so (kidding) “Avatar” films is listed as a producer on the project.
CBS is no stranger to taking previous franchise films and turning them into recently-rebooted series. We saw it with the just-premiered, Queen Latifah-led reboot of “The Equalizer.” And later this month, the network is also doing a new series, “Clarice,” which will continue the story of Agent Clarice Starling from “The Silence of the Lambs.”
With a pilot order, it’s clear that CBS is hoping “True Lies” will be its next big action series. If things go as planned, it’s likely “True Lies” could be coming your way later this year or in early-2022.
