As we now know, thanks to last week’s news, the trailer for “Avengers 4” (along with the title) is imminent. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, confirmed that fans would see the new trailer before the end of the year. However, even though we are now roughly 6 months from the film’s release, fans really don’t know anything about what to expect in the next installment of the Marvel franchise. However, as people related to the film start talking, we’re getting a better idea of some of the surprising faces we’ll see return in the film.
Obviously, if you’re reading this far, be warned, slight spoilers are forthcoming for “Avengers 4.”
Now, first we want to talk about a character that seemingly met his fate in “Captain America: Civil War,” Crossbones played by actor Frank Grillo. The last we saw the villain, he was blown up and disintegrated (back before it was cool in ‘Infinity War’). However, Grillo recently spilled the beans, saying that his ‘Civil War’ appearance isn’t the last time we’ll see Crossbones.

“[Crossbones] makes an appearance in the next ‘Avengers’ movie, but it’s a flashback,” Grillo said on “UFC Unfiltered.”
He continued, “And I’m allowed to say whatever I want because I’m never doing another Marvel movie…because I’m 117 years old.”
We’ve long-assumed that time-travel shenanigans will be in play for “Avengers 4,” as there is a literal device that controls time in the MCU and was used quite a bit in both “Doctor Strange” and ‘Infinity War.’ However, Grillo is describing something he says is a flashback, which could mean a variety of things. Perhaps, Crossbones literally just appears in a Captain America flashback. But maybe there’s more to it? We shall see.
Another supporting character looks to be making a comeback in “Avengers 4,” as well. Recently, at a film festival in Texas, one of the producers of the film let a comment slip that alludes to a certain sorcerer coming back in some capacity.
“When we got Tilda Swinton, she was just a 1-day availability,” executive producer Michael Grillo told folks at the recent Austin Film Festival (via SuperBroMovies).
As you probably know, Swinton plays The Ancient One, who was last seen in “Doctor Strange.” Again, considering magic and time-travel are most definitely a thing, it shouldn’t be a huge shocker that The Ancient One is making a comeback. In what capacity, is the real question.
Now, putting together everything we’ve learned from the previous film, ‘Infinity War,’ and the rumors and speculation regarding “Avengers 4,” it looks like Marvel Studios is pulling out all the stops to end the first major chapter in the MCU. At this point, don’t be surprised if seemingly minor characters make guest appearances, as the studio clearly intends on making “Avengers 4” a fan-favorite film that will outdo the massive success of ‘Infinity War.’
“Avengers 4” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
