At last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, filmmaker Max Winkler surprised many with his dark comedy “Flower.” Previous to that film, the director had only one other film under his belt, 2010’s “Ceremony,” which premiered in Toronto but received generally mixed reviews. In the meantime, Winkler honed his craft on TV, working on episodes of “New Girl,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” and “Casual.” Now, after the success of “Flower,” Winkler is jumping right into his next feature and he’s lined up a star-studded cast to join him.

Production on Winkler’s latest, “Jungleland,” is underway currently, starring Charlie Hunnam, Jack O’Connell, and Jessica Barden, according to Deadline. The film tells the story of a bare-knuckle boxer and his brother (O’Connell and Hunnam, respectively), as they travel across the country for the latest bout. Along the way, they meet an unexpected companion (Barden) that throws the entire brotherly relationship into chaos.
Hunnam is probably best known as the star of the FX hit series “Sons of Anarchy.” Since that series’ end, the actor has headlined quite a few films, with little success, including “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” and most recently, “Papillon.” O’Connell, on the other hand, has seen his star rise greatly over the last few years with leading roles in “Unbroken” and recent Netflix series “Godless.” Speaking of Netflix, Barden is definitely best known as the lead in the series “The End of the Fucking World.”
The film is co-written by Winkler, along with Theodore B. Bressman and David Branson Smith. Despite the decidedly British cast, “Jungleland” is currently filming Massachusetts and New York before traveling across the country.
There’s no release date set for the film, but clearly, this is a film that should premiere sometime in 2019.
