Okay, well this is definitely not “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” huh?
In the first teaser for Netflix’s upcoming “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” we don’t get much in the way of plot or dialogue, other than a creepy rendition of “Happy Birthday,” but what we do get is a heaping helping of style and tone. That style and tone is a night and day difference from the Melissa Joan Hart version of this story. And it looks great.
Based on the recent run of adult-themed, decidedly dark comic books of the same name, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” tells the story of the 16-year-old title character, played by “Mad Men’s” Kiernan Shipka, as she becomes fully engrossed in her family’s witchy ways. It’s a coming-of-age tale, but as seen in the teaser, this teenage witch isn’t just going to make jokes with her talking cat and pine over some boy at school. While those elements will probably still be included in some capacity, ‘Chilling Adventures’ will include a distinct horror vibe that sets this apart.
Joining Shipka in the cast are Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Abigail Cowen, Lachlan Watson, Bronson Pinchot, and Gavin Leatherwood.
“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” will hit Netflix on October 26.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.
