Someone needs to get James Gunn and Chris Pratt on the same page about “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Up until now, due to the events of “Avengers: Infinity War,” the “official” word about the forthcoming ‘Guardians’ threequel is that it would perhaps take place pre-‘Infinity War.’ The Russo Brothers even talked about that recently.
So, at last night’s MTV Awards, when Chris Pratt was asked about ‘Guardians 3,’ he played the role of the company man and did his best to throw fans off the scent. “It’s the Blue Man Group. It’s the Andy Griffith hologram. They’re the new Guardians. It’s going to be amazing,” joked Pratt.
“It might take place in the past. You don’t know. It might be a prequel,” says the actor.
For reasons made clear in the newest ‘Avengers’ film, if you were to take the climax’s events as the true ending, then the next ‘Guardians’ film would be notable for its lack of…Guardians. So, while trying to avoid talking ‘Avengers 4’ spoilers, which will be released a year before ‘Guardians 3,’ everyone has been throwing out this prequel idea. Well, James Gunn isn’t having it.
When the filmmaker who writes and directs all the ‘Guardians’ films, and has been involved in the newest ‘Avengers’ entries, as well, was asked on Twitter if the third film in his series could be a pre-‘Infinity War’ film, the director kept it short and sweet.
Gunn tweeted, “It will be after.”
Okay then. That settles it. No more of this silly “’Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will be a prequel!” nonsense. Spoiler alert, the Avengers will defeat Thanos. Those “dead” heroes will be coming back. And no, Marvel will not release a bunch of prequels in Phase 4.
It will be after.
