A new Pixar film is still a special thing. Even almost 25 years after the original “Toy Story” graced theaters and put the young studio on the map, film fans are still eagerly awaiting any news about what Pixar has coming up next. And while we know that next year’s “Toy Story 4” is sure to be a monster hit for the studio, Disney has gone ahead and formally announced 2020’s Pixar film, “Onward.”
In a tweet from Disney, the studio announced that Pixar has signed an all-star cast to voice characters in the upcoming film “Onward,” which will hit theaters on March 6, 2020. Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer are the big names attached to what is sure to be another emotionally-charged, but ultimately uplifting affair, as most of these films tend to be.
A story for the film has not been revealed but a bit of deduction can help narrow it down. At last year’s D23 conference, “Monsters University” director Dan Scanlon was announced to be working on a new film, with the working title “Suburban Fantasy World.” At the time, Scanlon described the film as a story of two brothers working to find their missing father.
“This film takes place in a fantasy world, but a modern fantasy world,” Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter said at the event. “Magic used to exist, but it was too difficult to do. Unicorns are everywhere, they are basically rodents.” In this world, the unicorns eat out of the trash like possums.”
Obviously, this sounds exactly like the type of film that Pixar would cook up, and will no doubt become a favorite among young folks and drive adults to tears. We still don’t know for sure that these two films are one and the same, but it’s a logical guess and is almost certainly correct.
Chris Pratt and Tom Holland are probably most famous for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the superheroes Star-Lord and Spider-Man, respectively. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is best known for her roles in the TV series “Seinfeld” and “Veep.” And Octavia Spencer is an Academy Award-winning actress known for her work in “The Help,” “The Shape of Water,” and “Hidden Figures.”
As mentioned, “Onward” will hit theaters on March 6, 2020.
