For many people, Chris Rock might just be known for his iconic stand-up comedy routines. For others, he may be just the guy that shows up from time to time in Adam Sandler films. But in recent years, Rock has been shattering preconceived notions about his abilities and tackling some incredibly interesting work such as the lead in the new season of “Fargo” and as a producer-star of the upcoming “Saw” spinoff horror film, “Spiral.” He’s also a filmmaker in his own right, writing and directing films such as “Head of State,” “I Think I Love My Wife,” and “Top FIve.” And apparently, Rock has a couple more feature scripts he’s finished that will continue to prove his range.
Speaking to THR, while promoting the upcoming release of Season 4 of Noah Hawley’s, “Fargo,” Rock is asked what he has upcoming that he’s been working on. The first project, which he doesn’t give many details about, is set to reunite Rock with a couple of his comedy buds, Adam Sandler and Dave Chappelle, two of the biggest names working in that genre. Obviously, that alone would be interesting to follow, though that’s assuming it’s not just another film that Sandler pushes out on a semi-regular basis on Netflix. But hey, let’s be optimistic and assume the best!

The second feature, however, is the one that piques our interest the most. Rock describes the script as “Bad Lieutenant, starring an insane actress.” If you’re a reader of this site, odds are you are familiar with “Bad Lieutenant” (both Abel Ferrara’s 1992 feature and Werner Herzog’s 2009 spiritual successor). The feature, as the title implies, follows the exploits of perhaps the very worst and most corrupt police officer imaginable. While we wouldn’t put it past Rock to figure out a way to make it funny, it’s likely that this is yet another left turn for the actor-turned-filmmaker. And if that’s the case, color us intrigued.
Obviously, both of these projects appear to be the early stages of development, but the idea of a “Bad Lieutenant”-esque film from Chris Rock as a writer-director is too interesting not to share and hope for.
