'Chronicle' Director Josh Trank Takes Another Project, Adaptation Of Video Game 'Shadow Of The Colossus'

Having delivered a handsome sleeper hit on a thrifty budget, everyone wants to work with director Josh Trank. The 26-year-old helmer was the man behind "Chronicle," which made back its $12 million budget ten times over on release in February, and since then he's been lining up all kinds of projects; while he won't direct any "Chronicle" sequel, he is attached to a film version of Soviet-themed comic book "The Red Star," and is developing not one, but two major superhero franchises, in Sony's "Venom" and Fox's "Fantastic Four."

And now there's one more to add to the pile, as Deadline now reveals that Sony have attached the helmer to "Shadow of the Colossus," an adaptation of the 2005 Playstation 2 video game of the same name. The plot, such as it is, involves a young man, Wander, who must slay sixteen enormous creatures in order to restore a girl called Mono to life. Fairly rote, right? Well, the game, created by Fumito Ueda ("Ico"), is generally regarded as one of the best examples of games-as-art, with a unusually melancholy feel and thematic richness. See the game in action below.

It was never a big seller (although it was recently given an HD upgrade for Playstation 3), but Trank is a fan of the game, and chased the job down himself. And if any game is to make it to the screen, this feels like it should be the one. Or "Bioshock." "Bioshock" rules. Anyway, it's early days: there's no writer on board, but Sony and Trank are actively searching for one. Could this be the director's next project? We suspect one of the superhero flicks will be next, but you never know…
