It was only a matter of time, but in November, Amazon Studios is finally joining the various other studios as part of the coveted Criterion Collection. That month, Paweł Pawlikowski’s Oscar-nominated love story, “Cold War,” will find its way into the collection, with a brand-new release, packed with special features and a luscious new 4K transfer. Needless to say, if Amazon Studios was going to eventually join Criterion anyway, might as well be for a film that is as incredible as “Cold War.”

As mentioned, the new “Cold War” release in November includes the new 4K transfer, that was overseen by Pawlikowski and his cinematographer Łukasz Zal. In addition, the sound is going to be impeccable, which is important with this film, with a 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio Soundtrack. But specs aside, there are plenty of special features, including a new conversation with Pawlikowski and filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñàrritu, as well as a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of the film, and brand-new English subtitles.

But “Cold War” isn’t the only new release from Criterion in November. Joining the Oscar-nominated film is Greg Mottola’s comedy “The Daytrippers.” The 1996 film features a new 4K restoration supervised by the director, as well as a new audio commentary featuring Mottola, editor Anne McCabe, and producer Steven Soderbergh. In addition, the release will also include “The Hatbox,” a 1985 short film by Mottola, with audio commentary by the director.
Other films joining the Criterion Collection in November include the Bette Davis-starring melodrama “Now, Voyager,” Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s beloved “All About Eve,” and the 3-hour Director’s Cut of Jean-Jacques Beineix’s “Betty Blue.”
Why not give yourself a bit of a pre-Christmas treat and enjoy a few of these new Criterion releases in November?
