After his breakout directorial effort, “Safety Not Guaranteed,” it appeared that Colin Trevorrow had his pick of future projects. And though he hadn’t previously worked on blockbusters, the filmmaker quickly landed “Jurassic World” and then “Star Wars: Episode IX.” But well before those massive franchise films, the director was approached by Marvel Studios for a now-famous superhero project.
According to an interview with the Empire Film podcast, Trevorrow revealed that well before he began work on “Jurassic World,” he actually had a meeting with Marvel Studios and its president Kevin Feige about one of the studios’ future projects, “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
“I did,” Trevorrow revealed. “I met [Marvel Studios] on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Long, long ago. Very Early. It was a great conversation.”
He continued, “I was not a comic book kid. That wasn’t my thing. I was a ‘Star Wars’ kid, an ‘Indiana Jones’ kid, a Spielberg kid. That was my thing. So, it was a little bit more of a personal understanding that you need someone who loved [comic books] growing up…You gotta live and breathe it in the way I am with [‘Jurassic World’] and the things I’m involved with now.”
Obviously, that love of Spielberg and “Star Wars” led to his previously referenced jobs (though, the less said about his “Star Wars” experience, the better…oof). And of course, without Trevorrow, “Guardians of the Galaxy” thrived under the direction of James Gunn, who clearly is exactly the type of filmmaker that the ‘Jurassic World’ helmer was describing above.
But even though he’s not involved in the MCU and is likely never going to be, Trevorrow is still very excited to see what Feige and Co. have accomplished, saying the MCU is “one of the most impressive feats of narrative construction in film history.”
“I don’t know if they can be matched,” added Trevorrow.
Trevorrow just released the new short film “Battle at Big Rock” and is currently in development on “Jurassic World 3.”
