Sequels tend to be a risky proposition — capturing the magic of what made an original film so special to start with is difficult, and that’s compounded by the risk involved of changing up the mix to offer something different. So it’s with (reserved) excitement that I’m looking forward to "John Wick 2," which has just found a new villain.
THR reports that Common has landed the role of the head of security for a female crime lord. We last saw the Oscar-winning rapper, actor, and songwriter go bad when he tangled with Liam Neeson in "Run All Night," so he knows this kind of thriller turf. Meanwhile, the trade also reveals that Ian McShane will reprise his role as Winston. As for the plot, it’s still being kept secret, though Reeves has vaguely teased where we’ll find his character next.
“I think we have a really good premise, and it’s an organic premise. It’s basically — to me there’s John Wick and then there’s John. You know, John is the married guy whose wife just died, and that five years of his life. Then there’s John Wick, who’s the mythical assassin. In this, John Wick’s past comes and infiltrates John’s life and John Wick, in a way, has to fight for John,” he told Collider.
Chad Stahelski directs, and production will start soon. No word yet on a release date.
