A big hit at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, the Finnish film “Compartment No. 6” has been compared to Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunset” in its ideas of romance on board a train and the philosophical, dialogue-heavy scenes it features. Directed by Juho Kuosmanen, “Compartment No. 6” stars Seidi Haarla and Yuriy Borisov in what is primarily a two-hander.
Written by Andris Feldmanis, Livia Ulman, and Juho Kuosmanen, the screenplay was inspired by the novel of the same name (“Hytti nro 6”) by Rosa Liksom. Here’s the official synopsis:
A young Finnish woman escapes an enigmatic love affair in Moscow by boarding a train to the Arctic port of Murmansk. Forced to share the long ride and a tiny sleeping car with a larger-than-life Russian miner, the unexpected encounter leads the occupants of Compartment No. 6 to face major truths about human connection.
“Compartment No. 6” opens in select theaters on January 26 via Sony Pictures Classics. Watch the first trailer below.
