It’s been almost three years that we’ve known that there was a “John Wick” TV spinoff in the works, titled “The Continental.” But in the years since its announcement, there hasn’t been a whole lot of information released about when we might see the action series make its debut on the small screen. Well, according to the Starz network boss (via Deadline), there’s a good reason why — the series is still quite a ways off.
Speaking at a TCA panel, the question about when we might see “The Continental” arrive on TV screens came up. And unfortunately, it appears that the series is still years away.
Jeffrey Hirsch, Starz President and CEO, said, “I had a meeting on a season pitch for this yesterday. We like the group of writers, and we’re trying to get it in the right place so it doesn’t interfere with the motion picture. It will air sometime after the fourth movie.”
For those that haven’t been keeping up to date on the “John Wick” news as of late, the fourth film was announced with a May 21, 2021 release date. That would mean the series is likely not even going to see the light of day until well after that date, which would put it in late 2021 or 2022. However, there is one more wrinkle that might interfere with that prediction — “The Matrix 4.”
Recently, it was announced that “The Matrix 4” would arrive in theaters on May 21, 2021, the very same day as “John Wick 4.” And considering there’s no way studios would have rival Keanu Reeves action films release on the same day, one of those is likely going to get delayed. With “The Matrix 4” expected to begin production soon, well before “John Wick 4,” you have to assume that the latter will get pushed to later in 2021 or maybe even 2022. If that happens, then “The Continental” could still be even further away.
Long story short, don’t expect the world of “John Wick” to arrive on your TV screens anytime soon.
