RZA, leader of the legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan, is jumping back into the movie game with his newest endeavor: “Cut Throat City” a heist film set in the lower ninth ward of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. RZA, Shameik Moore (who is providing the voice for Miles Morales in the animated film”Spider–Man: Into the Spider-Verse“), Wesley Snipes, Demetrius Shipp Jr., Denzel Whitaker, Keean Johnson, Kat Graham, and Tyron Woodley came to the famed Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con to unveil the crime caper film which centers on a group of childhood friends that resort to theft after they become desperate for work following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Having mostly done films that center around his RZA’s strong love of martial arts, “Cut Throat City” is a stark departure from his previous projects. RZA himself said from the stage about the film’s premise, “you have talent, ambition, and aspiration but those things get washed away. When they get washed away you turn to desperation.” The film certainly is a strong reminder of the effects of a system that doesn’t work as intended to help those in need, definitely reminiscent of “Set It Off” released in 1996 and starring Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Cut Throat City” will be released in 2019.
Here’s the official synopsis and trailer:
CUT THROAT CITY is the story of four boyhood friends in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward who return after Hurricane Katrina to find their homes decimated, no jobs, and no help from FEMA. Reluctantly turning to a local gangster for work, the friends are hired to pull off a daring heist in the heart of the city. But the job goes bad and they find themselves on the run, hunted by two idealistic detectives and a neighborhood warlord who thinks the friends stole the heist money. With their only way out to buy their way back, the friends decide to get what they need by turning the tables on the casinos that have taken from their city for years… by doing a little taking of their own.
