Unfortunately for the CW, the TV network is never going to convince Gal Gadot to reprise her role as Wonder Woman for a new weekly series. But hey, CW is resourceful and sure does love taking big swings with its DC superhero universe, dubbed the Arrowverse, which currently includes “Batwoman,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash,” “Superman and Lois,” and “Supergirl.”And so, without Gadot, they’re doing the next best thing, “Wonder Girl.”
According to Deadline, CW is developing a new “Wonder Girl” series based on the newly-unveiled character from the DC Comics universe. The series is, obviously, produced by Berlanti Productions along with “Queen of the South” executive producer/co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez.
“Wonder Girl” is based on the story of comic book character, Yara Flor, who is a Latina Dreamer that discovers she is actually the descendant of an Amazonian Warrior and a Brazilian River God. Yes, that sounds nuts, but again, we’re talking “Wonder Woman”-esque mythology, so just go with it. With her new powers, Flor becomes Wonder Girl and fights crime and bad guys and whatever CW throws at her.

With “Supergirl” ending its run after the upcoming sixth season, there was a void left for a series led by a female character. And with “Wonder Woman 1984” on the horizon (either this Christmas or sometime in 2021), the world is primed and ready to go for a pseudo-spinoff of that popular franchise. We say “pseudo-spinoff” because the entirety of the CW Arrowverse has no overt connections to the current film universe, except for the acknowledgment that they exist in some greater multiverse. All that to say, don’t expect a Gal Gadot cameo.
There’s no release date set for “Wonder Girl,” but CW has these superhero shows down, so we can most likely expect this series, if all goes well, probably in time for next year’s fall season.
