The Playlist members that have seen the Duplass brothers upcoming comedic drama, “Cyrus” starring Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and John C. Reilly have raved, calling a sweet, funny, hilarious, charming and even sometimes, creepy film.
Centering on a sadsack recently divorced guy (Reilly) who meets the woman of his dreams (Tomei) only to be sidelined by the unhealthy codependent relationship she shares with her developmentally challenged son (Hill), the film was scheduled to his theaters July 9th, but Fox Searchlight just announced that the picture has been bumped up to a June 18th platform release instead.
This news dovetails perfectly with the recent announcements of BamCinemaFest‘s line-up in Brooklyn, which has tended to act like a Sundance greatest-hits collection in recent years if you’re in New York and couldn’t make it to out to Utah. We’re not arguing with that.
And BamCinemaFest is generally a good time. Pictures of interest to us include the NY debut of Nicholas Winding Refn’s meditative Viking drama, “Valhalla Rising,” the 20010 SXSW Film big award winner “Tiny Furniture,” the Mark Duplass starring off-kilter sci-fi comedy film “Mars,” the the 2010 Sundance picture, “Cold Weather,” the indie pic, “Wah Do Dem” that features a small role by Norah Jones, plus many more, a bevy of shorts, and a selection of picks by French filmmaker Oliver Assayas (“Zodiac” and Maurice Pialat’s 1972 autobiographical drama, “We Won’t Grow Old Together”are his two picks).
We’ll likely see you there in June. As for “Cyrus,” it looks like it has all the ingredients to be one of the bigger indie hits of the summer. Can it do the same numbers of Fox Searchlight’s super successful, “500 Days of Summer”? That remains to be seen, but we’re rooting for it.
