All it takes is about 5 seconds of watching the new trailer for “Daddy Issues” to understand that director Amara Cash has crafted one of the more unique films of the year. Premiering at last year’s LA Outfest, “Daddy Issues” is finally coming to US theaters and VOD this month and with it, a chance for film fans to experience what this up and coming filmmaker has up her sleeve.
“Daddy Issues” is about a young woman, Maya, that goes off to LA to make it as a fashion designer. She’s seen as a loner and a weirdo, but is quickly accepted into this new friend group that includes her crush, Jasmine. However, when Maya learns that Jasmine is involved in a sugar daddy-like situation with a male, the idea of their own relationship gets thrown for a loop and craziness ensues. But again, describing the plot of the film doesn’t do it nearly the justice it deserves. As seen in the trailer, “Daddy Issues” has a style that transcends the plot and creates something totally unique.
The film is written by Alex Bloom and directed by Cash. “Daddy Issues” stars Madison Lawlor, Montana Manning, and Andrew Pifko.
“Daddy Issues” opens in select theaters and VOD on April 19.
Here’s the synopsis:
DADDY ISSUES follows Maya, a 19-year-old queer artist, who escapes into her candy-colored world of drawing emo cartoons and cyber-stalking her insta-crush Jasmine, a sexually fluid fashion designer. One night Maya meets Jasmine IRL. Sparks fly and the two begin a romance that gives Maya her first taste of true love and Jasmine the inspiration to jumpstart her career. It’s all gumdrops and fairytales until Maya discovers Jasmine’s in an unconventional relationship with Simon, a doctor moonlighting as a sugar daddy. What started as a dream come true suddenly turns into Maya’s worst nightmare.
