Hey, the Oscars aren't the only awards show in town for movie lovers. Granted, it's the biggest and glitziest, but if you're a movie fan looking to keep track of which films are winning what, the Grammys are on the way, and they've announced their nominations for the 54th awards ceremony. Soundtrack/score hounds will be pleased.
Granted, we're not sure at all how the eligibility process works and why movies as old as "Tangled" and as recent as "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2" can run against each other, but whatever. Anyway, while byzantine Academy rules kept Clint Mansell's "Black Swan" out of contention last year, it can compete here, facing two entries from Alexandre Desplat ('Deathly Hallows' and the Oscar nominated "The King's Speech"), Daft Punk's "Tron: Legacy" and, suprisingly, Ryan Shore's score for genre flick "The Shrine" (yeah, we never heard of it either — trailer below). Okay, so he's Howard Shore's nephew, so maybe it's not all that shocking.
In the Best Song category (which is also shared with television work, hence the inclusion of a "Family Guy" song) we have a completely random batch of tunes, ranging from Cher's "You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me" from "Burlesque" to Justin Bieber's "Born To Be Somebody" from "Never Say Never" to Zooey Deschanel's "So Long" from "Winnie The Pooh."
How will this reflect the Oscar nominees? Probably not at all, as the rules and regulations for both are hugely different. But nice to see some of these composers get shine outside of Academy circles. The Grammys will air on February 12th, when every hipster in Brooklyn will be watching to see if Bon Iver wins something so they can call him a sellout.
