Damien Chazelle To Write & Direct New Series For Apple

The rise of writer/director Damien Chazelle has been pretty incredible to watch. After breaking out with “Whiplash” — which went from Sundance sensation to real deal Oscar flick — he delivered the smash hit musical “La La Land” which made him the youngest person to ever win a Best Director trophy. Chazelle is currently filming the astronaut drama “First Man” starring Ryan Gosling, which will surely earn him more chatter, but after that, he’s diving deep into the world of Peak TV.

Last fall, it was announced that Netflix had scooped up “The Eddy,” a new, eight-episode musical series that will be executive produced by Chazelle, set in contemporary multi-cultural Paris, revolving around a club, its owner, the house band, and the chaotic city that surrounds them. The talent behind the project is strong with six-time Grammy Award-winner Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little PillMichael Jackson’s Bad) writing the music and Jack Thorne (“National Treasure,” “This is England,” “Wonder”) penning the script.

Now, Apple has inked Chazelle to write and direct every episode of a new drama, and the company is so stoked on the idea, they’re going to straight-to-series. Unfortunately, that’s all the details there are for now, but it’s another huge coup for Apple. The tech company has been going hard and spending big on original content over the past year, landing Steven Spielberg’s anthology series “Amazing Stories,” a drama about a morning show that will star Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, “Are You Sleeping” starring Octavia Spencer, a comedy with Kristen Wiig, and possibly a space drama produced by J.J. Abrams. Now, the only question remains is how they’re gonna deliver all this content. It makes you wonder about those rumors that they’ll buy up Netflix…. [Variety]
