Danny Boyle Warns That '28 Days Later' Sequel With Alex Garland Might Not Happen But "Never Say Never"

Film fans are an excitable bunch. So, it’s not surprising when they get all worked up over the idea of a new sequel to a beloved film when a director teases it’s arrival. But sometimes, the filmmaker in question is a bit too excited and makes things appear a bit more concrete than they actually are. That seems to be the case with Danny Boyle and the proposed threequel to “28 Days Later.”

Recently, Boyle spoke about the idea that he and writer Alex Garland had fleshed out an idea for a third film in the zombie horror franchise. And while he stopped short of confirming it would happen, the director did make it seem like it was only a matter of time. However, in a new interview with the Observer, he walks back a little on those comments.

“I think Alex did a very interesting treatment for a third part,” Boyle said. “But whether anything will come of it, I don’t know.”

He continued, “It feels like it should be with Alex, who is such a wonderful writer, but he’s also directing his own stuff now. I think he wants to concentrate on that, which is understandable. He’s just completed a huge television series [FX’sDevs’] and he’s deep into that. So there won’t be anything for a while but never say never. You never know.”

As we said in our initial report, Garland has been one of the more in-demand filmmakers in recent years after his breakout directorial debut “Ex Machina” and his acclaimed follow-up “Annihilation.” Now, as Boyle alluded, Garland is deep into post-production on his FX series “Devs,” which is expected to be one of the network’s bigger launches later this year or early 2020. From there, it would appear that Garland has his choice of what to do next.

The same can be said about Boyle. He’s always marched to the beat of his own drum, as far as career choices go. He left “Bond 25” because of creative issues and went on to make a Beatles-themed musical. Is a zombie movie something he wants to tackle next? Your guess is as good as ours.

So, ultimately, it would appear that the duo has an idea for a third film that they’re really excited about. However, saying that it’s a sure thing or a guarantee is premature.
