Though he got his start on the small screen, aside from a one-off 2001 project “Strumpet” and of course, the London Olympics, director Danny Boyle has mostly remained planted in the feature film world. But with “Trance” earning the least amount of money in theaters since his breakout film “Shallow Grave” (and obviously arriving with much bigger expectations and star power than that film), it looks like Boyle will head back to television for a new project
Radio Times reveals Boyle will direct a “police drama” for Channel 4 in the U.K. And that’s about all the details at the moment, but needless to say, we’re already pretty intrigued by this premise. The show is being penned by Sam Bains and Jesse Armstrong, the pair behind the hit U.K. comedy series “Peep Show,” so this will certainly mark a change of pace for them. As for any other details—how many episodes the series will run, and when it might air—those are not being divulged at this time.
Also brewing at Channel 4 is “a huge period drama” entitled “Indian Summer,” slated to be directed by “My Week With Marilyn” helmer Simon Curtis. Again, details are slim, but the ten-part seriers will be “about the birth of modern India.”
So add Danny Boyle to the growing list of filmmakers that are plying their trade on the small screen, and for us it doesn’t matter where directors of his caliber work, as long as they’re working. And this is one we’ll be looking out for.
