‘Dark Phoenix’ Trailer: The X-Men's Deadliest Foe Is Jean Grey

With just five months left until release, the next, much delayed and still yet anticipated “X-Men” film has finally dropped a trailer. Having been mysteriously absent at Comic-Con, the upcoming New York Comic Con, and pretty much every other Con where these types of films show off, “Dark Phoenix,” originally scheduled for this year, is now set for a 2019 Valentine’s Day release. But it’s been an unusually quiet marketing strategy up until now.

Front and center is Sophie Turner who plays Jean Grey. Jean’s Phoenix powers are taken to new heights as a result of an evil, power-hungry force. Having killed it in “Game of Thrones” and already having embodied Jean in two previous X-films, including “X-Men: Apocalypse,” Turner seems poised for her breakout on the big screen. What we’ll be waiting to see is how the narrative and direction plays out, which brings the next peculiar and interesting point.

Disney-Fox Merger: What Does It Mean For The Big Film Franchises?

20th Century Fox has had a rough go of it of late. The troubled “New Mutants” film was delayed twice and is undergoing what has been reported to be a massive overhaul for summer 2019. As mentioned, “Dark Phoenix” was supposed to arrive this year and was pushed four months. Rumors of lengthy reshoots surfaced, but apparently, they’re only in production for three weeks (and happening as we speak; this film will be editing down to the wire).

“Dark Phoenix” is helmed by Simon Kinberg, who has produced, written for and been on the “X-Men” franchise since 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Known as the Kevin Feige equivalent of the X-Men Universe over at Fox, Kinberg will be making his directorial debut with this film. Starring alongside Turner is are the usual suspects–James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and joining them this time, Jessica Chastain, as the mysterious force behind Jean Gray’s turn to the dark side.

2018 has definitely been a big year with superhero movies such as “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” With the new “Captain Marvel” trailer being dropped, it definitely seems like 2019 has some interesting and much-anticipated superheroes on the horizon. Not to mention, with the Fox/Disney merger, it’ll be interesting to see how the Marvel superhero universe pans out.

Here is the official synopsis:

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

“Dark Phoenix” opens February 14, 2019. Watch the new trailer and let us know what you think.
