Will Probably Look Great, Sound Awful
With “Noah” not set to film until next year, and now probably looking for a new leading man since Christian Bale is gonna spend his 2012 tossing back brews with Terrence Malick as they embark on two films together, Darren Aronofsky is likely looking to keep his directing skills a well oiled machine, so what the hell, he’s just gonna go direct a video for Metallica and Lou Reed.
In case you haven’t heard, the aging metal band and elder cantankerous Velvet Underground frontman have collaborated on a new two-disc, ninety minute opus Lulu. The concept album is based on the plays by Frank Wedekind about a stripper turned social-climber turned prostitute, and yes, it’s apparently as ear-rapingly terrible as all that suggests. Oh, are we being too harsh? Have a listen to “Iced Honey” yourself below, as it’s the song that will be getting turned into a video.
Lars Ulrich, who has admitted losing sleeping over “Kill Bill,” won’t fuck up again with another filmmaker and is excited at the opportunity to be working with Aronofksy. “As if making a record with Lou Reed is not enough, now I get to make a video with Darren Aronofsky, who has been among my very favorite filmmakers since his first movie, ‘Pi,’ ” he said, probably after looking the guy up on IMDB.
But at the very least, this thing will probably look great. Aronofsky is bringing his regular collaborator, Matthew Libatique, to take on director of photography duties. So expect some tracking shots of Lou Reed from directly behind his head. “Iced Honey” will shoot in the San Francisco Bay area, and it will be turned around fast, as it’s expected to premiere later this month. We have to admit, we’re curious, in a watching-a-car-crash sort of way. Aronofsky+Metallica+Lou Reed…what could possibly go wrong? [AP via Stereogum]
