Ready for a shocking piece of news? David Ayer’s next film will be a gritty crime thriller!
Actually, judging by his latest output, the filmmaker’s return to the crime genre might just be surprising. Lately, Ayer has been stuck in Genre City, working on films like “Suicide Squad” and “Bright,” neither of which were met with very much critical acclaim. So, maybe a return to the world of gritty crime is just what the filmmaking doctor ordered.
Deadline is reporting that Ayer’s next film, “Tax Collector,” will be based on a script he wrote and will star Shia LaBeouf. The exact plot is being kept a secret, for the time being, however, you can expect someone to be collecting taxes, that’s for sure!
Previous to his superhero and fantasy work, Ayer made a name for himself as the gritty crime guy. He wrote “Training Day,” which landed Denzel Washington an Oscar, and wrote/directed “End of Watch, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal.
As we said above, “Tax Collector” is set to star LaBeouf, who is currently in production of his upcoming film “Honey Boy,” and will also star Bobby Soto, who has been on various TV series, including recently on “S.W.A.T.”
The report also mentions that this should be a fairly low-budget affair that will give Ayer a project to complete in between his work on “Bright” and the upcoming sequel. The director has also been rumored to be attached to a couple different DC films in recent years, since the release of “Suicide Squad.” However, it appears that his time with DC superheroes is done for now. Of course, with the way that Warner Bros. and DC are handling their films, throwing new projects into development on a daily basis, Ayer could find himself directing the fourth Joker film soon enough.
No word on a release date for “Tax Collector,” but with LaBeouf and Soto announced as part of the cast, we could be hearing more news soon enough.
