Since Warner Bros. opened the floodgates by allowing fan enthusiasm (aka constant social media discussion and sometimes toxic behavior) to dictate the future of the company by giving Zack Snyder a reported $70 million to finish his cut of “Justice League,” David Ayer has been vocal about his desire to get his version of “Suicide Squad” released in much the same way. And the filmmaker’s latest comment about his Director’s Cut of the critically-panned film shows why he thinks WB should go ahead and release it.

It’s no secret that David Ayer was on the front line of the marketing push when “Suicide Squad” arrived in theaters in 2017. It wasn’t until shortly after the film was released and the behind-the-scenes drama was becoming more well-known that the filmmaker was able to speak more openly about his displeasure at the finished product that hit theaters. The Cliff’s Notes version is basically Ayer was only given a very short time to write the script for “Suicide Squad” before production was set to begin. He was able to rush out a script and film his version of the feature. Unfortunately, when WB saw the cut, the studio ended up being heavily involved in changes, bringing on a variety of editors to Frankenstein a version of the film, which was released to the public. And when it was released, the general public paid good money for tickets, driving the box office to almost $750 million worldwide, but critics trashed the film.

Now, Ayer wants everyone to know that his original cut was so much better than what was seen on the big screen. And the reason he acted so enthusiastic about the original release is that he’s a team player.
Ayer tweeted, “I took the hits like a good soldier when the studio cut hit the streets. It’s who I am. I watched my cut for the first time since it was abandoned. It is f*cking amazing. On God. I felt guilty for years like I fc*ked. Nope. It’s fire. It’s the tone of the Comicon trailer 100%”

WB has spoken about the idea that there could be more Director’s Cuts of controversial films in the future, saying that the Snyder Cut is not the beginning of a trend. However, it does appear that fans are excited about the new “Justice League.” So, who knows? Maybe an Ayer Cut is in the future?
