David Fincher & Tim Miller's Long-Delayed 'The Goon' Animated Film Is Headed Back Into Development At Fox

Believe it or not, we are approaching a full decade since David Fincher first tried to get an animated version of “The Goon” on the big screen. In fact, the news is so old, there are probably a healthy number of readers of this site that don’t even know what I’m talking about. But hey, no matter if you’re a fan of “The Goon” or just someone who clicked this story because you saw David Fincher, we have some pretty good news for you.

According to a recent post on the Kickstarter for “The Goon” (yes, they tried to crowdfund it at one time), the folks behind the campaign have announced that the long-awaited animated film, based on the comic book series from Eric Powell, is finally going into serious development over at Disney-owned Fox. For those not aware, “The Goon” is a supernatural/horror story focused on the titular character as he all sorts of baddies. The comic series is known for its stylized art and interesting setting.

The Kickstarter raised more than $441,000 and according to the post, was instrumental in scoring this new lease on life. “With your generous contributions, we were able to finish a full storyboard animatic of the film, complete with amazing voice acting, sound design, and music. This template for the film sold the producers and studio on the potential of THE GOON and we’re beginning a new round of development,” the post says.

And now, “The Goon” is ready to go into development, once again. Although, “development” is no guarantee that the film is going to get made. But in the decade since this project was first announced, this sounds like the furthest it’s ever gotten. The campaign post says that the film now has new producers, joining the already assembled group of David Fincher, Tim Miller (and his Blur Studio), and Powell.

“It’s The Chernin Group and they’ve brought us movies such as the PLANET OF THE APES franchise, RED SPARROW and OBLIVION,” says the update. “They love the project and we’re all excited about this next phase and continues the collaboration with the fabulous Eric Powell, David Fincher, and all the folks at Blur Studio.”

Look, “The Goon” could be a great film, and will likely be beautiful with Miller and Fincher aboard. But let’s not get our hopes up just yet. That being said, hopes can be raised to about 33% right now. And that’s something.
