It’s not a hot take to say that David Lynch is a bit mysterious. He seemingly exists on an alternate creative plane than most people in Hollywood, making films and TV shows that are wholly unique, while also spending time making YouTube videos about the weather and crafting light fixtures for fun. So, it shouldn’t be all that surprising to know that David Lynch’s newest project is a bit puzzling, as the filmmaker is joining forces with the rock band Interpol for a series of NFTs. No, not even David Lynch is immune to the NFT craze (though, hasn’t that bubble already burst?).
Beginning today and running for a series of days, David Lynch and Interpol are auctioning off a series of non-fungible tokens, aka NFTs, that combine the music of the band with the visuals of the filmmaker. And if you are all about NFTs and want to own a unique piece of David Lynch filmmaking, then now’s your chance.

The genesis of this project actually dates back more than a decade when David Lynch created the short film, “I Touch a Red Button Man,” which was used by Interpol as a visual accompaniment to the band’s song, “Lights.” While the short doesn’t seem to have changed for this NFT project, you can see by the official website that Interpol has now recrafted the song in several new ways and given the short film a bit of a visual update to make it more NFT-ish.
Look, this is a pretty ridiculous, silly project. Also, it’s really strange to see David Lynch attached to some sort of internet flash-in-the-pan trend. But here we are. It’s happening now. And you’re more than welcome to spend money to be part of it here.
Here’s the official description of the NFT project:
In 2008, members of the band Interpol sat down with filmmaker David Lynch to discuss working together on a future project.
In 2010, collaborative talks resumed with plans for Lynch to produce visuals for Interpol’s performance at the 2011 Coachella Festival. The outcome was Lynch’s famous animated short film “I Touch a Red Button Man” accompanied by Interpol’s song “Lights”.
Skipping ahead to present day, Interpol has taken inspiration from Lynch to reimagine sections of “Lights”, their song inspired by the film. Together, Lynch and Interpol are now memorializing their collaboration through a series of seven pieces that will live in the infinite digital realm forever.
