Director David Mackenzie is heading to FX to helm a new crime series after making a string of feature films such as the robbery thriller “Hell or High Water,” the Scottish historical epic “The Outlaw King,” and the prison drama “Starred Up.”
A report from Variety has revealed that Mackenzie will bring his extensive directing experience to FX’s “Under The Banner of Heaven” with actors Andrew Garfield (“Red Riding 1974,” “The Social Network“) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People,” “War of The Worlds“) taking key roles on the project. “Under The Banner of Heaven” is based on the novel by author Jon Krakauer and will be adapted for the small screen by “Big Love” writer Dustin Lance Black (“Milk,” “J. Edgar“), who has been involved for almost a decade.
The FX On Hulu series focuses on a devout detective’s faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.
Garfield has taken the lead role of Prye, an LDS elder, and Edgar-Jones plays Brenda, a young Mormon woman that is brutally murdered.

Mackenzie and Black will be part of the show’s extensive producing team consisting of Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Samie Kim Falvey, Anna Culp, Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Gillian Berrie.
Edgar-Jones was the breakout star of Hulu’s “Normal People,” and she’s been cast in several hotly-tipped projects since that. Despite rampant unconfirmed rumors, Andrew Garfield has denied claims that he’ll be reprising his former role as “The Amazing Spider-Man“s Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” His upcoming projects include “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “tick, tick…BOOM!.”
