David O. Russell’s ‘Joy’ Starring Jennifer Lawrence Set For A December 2015 Release Date

American Hustle"[David O. Russell] recently texted me at I think 4 in the morning, and he was like, ‘I think I want to make a movie about the woman who invented the [Miracle] Mop. You want to do it?’ " Jennifer Lawrence explained on “Live With Kelly and Michael” in March. "I was like, ‘Yeah,’ " she added. "I can just imagine David looking at somebody mopping and being like, ‘Yeah, that’s my next screenplay.’ "

And while it sounded like a typical David O. Russell project at the time—meaning one of many in the hamper—not only is it next, it’s got a release date and an official title. Box Office site Exhibitors Relations tweets that 20th Century Fox will release David O. Russell’s “Joy” on Christmas Day 2015. That’s the power of Jennifer Lawrence for you (not to mention Russell who’s been nominated for Best Director three pictures in a row now).

“Joy" is about Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop, who worked three jobs before seeing her invention become a sensation, bringing her from rags to riches. And now that screenplay and story is getting a big league boost. “Bridesmaids" writer Annie Mumolo wrote the screenplay and Russell surely has done his own personal rewrite (as he did with his last three films).

December 2015 is a busy season—the movie will face off against "Mission: Impossible 5," and Fox’s own "Kung Fu Panda 3" opens up on December 23rd. Of course, a week before that a little movie called "Star Wars: Episode VII" will arrive too.
