In the past few days, we’ve caught a glimpse of producer/screenwriter David S. Goyer‘s confidence in absorbing source material and tweaking it when needed, as he recently claimed that he schooled Christopher Nolan on the rules of Batman before “The Dark Knight” trilogy, as well as defended the controversial ending of “Man of Steel.” However contentious his accuracy might be, it’s undeniably clear that he cherishes an adaptation, and now he’s set to bring another to network TV.
Just on the tail of announcing their Commissioner Gordon series “Gotham,” for Fox, Warner Bros. TV and DC Comics have decided to continue that comics beat with “Constantine,” a new series on NBC executive produced by Goyer and Daniel Cerone (“The Mentalist”). Last seen onscreen in director Francis Lawrence‘s 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves, John Constantine is a wry con man-turned-detective who battles demons from beyond, and it appears the new show will jump straight into the action with an as-yet-unannounced lead.
Meanwhile, Goyer still has the somewhat pressing cloud of “Batman vs. Superman” hanging over his head, but during a recent AP interview the screenwriter claimed the project is “further along than what I think people realize.” Whether that means only the final script is completed or Zack Snyder has actually started filming is up for debate, but Goyer teased that he’s sticking to his guns when it comes to fan input.
“From a fan point of view, we’re conscious of that when you’re working on these things, but you can’t let yourself be paralyzed by that,” he said. “At the end of the day you still have to create something and if you think, ‘What would the fans like’ or, ‘What will the audience like’ then you stop being creative. You have to write the story that you want to write and hope that people want to see it.
As for any hints about which side he’s leaning toward for the showdown, Goyer explained, “Most comic book people would say Batman because the ultimate strategist, even though it makes no sense whatsoever if Superman just flicked his finger back and Batman would be done for, but I don’t know, you’ll have to watch the film in a year and a half to see what happens.”
