'The Wire' Creator David Simon To Write New HBO Limited Series About A Fascist, Xenophobic President

HBO isn’t getting out of the David Simon business anytime soon. As his latest series, “The Deuce,” ends its run next year, the writer-producer already has his next project lined up at the network, titled “The Plot Against America.”

THR reports that HBO has signed Simon to write a six-episode miniseries called “The Plot Against America,” based on the Philip Roth novel of the same name. The series will follow an alternate version of America where a working-class Jewish family in New Jersey watches as Charles Lindbergh, the heroic pilot, becomes President. However, Lindbergh is a xenophobic populist and turns America towards fascism. But obviously that’s just some sort of crazy alternate universe and doesn’t have any real ties to the current state of the country, right? Depressing.

As you might expect, Simon is once again teaming up with Ed Burns to co-write the script and help executive produce the series. Burns and Simon have previously worked together on “The Wire” and “Generation Kill.”

Simon, on the other hand, has worked more with HBO, with “The Deuce” being his most recently produced work. Previously, the writer has brought “The Corner,” “The Wire,” “Generation Kill,” “Treme” and “Show Me a Hero” to the premium network.

Many readers might immediately think of “The Plot Against America” as a sort of sister series to Amazon’sThe Man in the High Castle.” That series follows an alternate history of America where Hitler and the Nazis won World War II and installed a new government in the United States. ‘High Castle’ was an early hit for Amazon and has been ordered for a fourth season.

There’s no release date for “The Plot Against America.”
