Yesterday, we shared the most recent (and final) trailer for “Deadpool 2.” While the marketing materials for the sequel, so far, haven’t quite lived up to the high bar set by the first film, the final trailer had some really great action and jokes that got us excited for the film’s release next month.
The great action is courtesy of director David Leitch (“Atomic Blonde”), who is coming on board the sequel and replacing Tim Miller. You can tell that as far as the action goes, the sequel turns everything up a notch. However, what has stayed the same are the ridiculous amount of jokes, and the timeliness of said quips. In an interview with Fandango, Leitch talks about the jokes and mentions that some that you have heard in the trailers didn’t actually make it into the final film.
“It’s funny, there’s so many. There’s so many that are on the cutting room floor, because you do all this improvisation, and you might have three or four versions of one of these moments. You’re like, “Oh my God,” but you can only pick one to tell the story. I think it’ll be a good thing for the Blu-ray extras, to see all the alts that we had and couldn’t put in the movie. Some of them actually snuck into the trailers as Easter eggs. How about I leave it at that?” explained the director.
When pressed about some jokes being changed in the final film from the trailer, he continued, “There might be one punchline that we had three versions for and we loved them all, and only one can live in the movie, so we might have snuck a couple in sort of additional materials that people can discover.”
While we don’t know which jokes made it in the film and which hit the cutting room floor, the director does say that a couple of jokes might reference the crowded month ahead for filmgoers. With “Avengers: Infinity War” coming out next week, followed three weeks later by “Deadpool 2,” which is then followed by “Solo: A Star Wars Story” one week after, it’s going to be a busy month for fandom. And you can expect Deadpool to have some commentary about that.
“I think we might have a couple comments in the film. That would be fun for people to hear those jokes. They’re definitely fresh and timely when they come up,” said Leitch.
Now, another topic that will be asked of every comic book filmmaker at Fox and Disney will be about the impending merger of the two massive studios. Leitch doesn’t know any specifics, but he does wonder what the future might hold for Deadpool.
“What I like about Deadpool is I think that the more you can put Deadpool in a box, the more he wants to push outside of it. Pairing him with people that you think would confine him, it’s a challenge to be irreverent, and it’s a challenge to keep the same sort of subversive nature. I think there’s something interesting about that. I don’t know. Who would he pair with? Captain America, that’d be pretty funny. I don’t know. There are definitely some people. I mean, I’m a fan of that sort of whole Marvel universe. I think you could just throw a dart at a board and put Deadpool next to them, and it would be funny,” concludes Leitch.”
