After literally years of discussion (since the 2018 debut of “Deadpool 2” and the subsequent purchase of Fox by Disney), we now have reported movement on the highly-anticipated third film in the “Deadpool” franchise. It would appear that Disney, Marvel Studios, and Ryan Reynolds have found the writers that will bring the foul-mouthed hero into a new era.
According to Deadline, Marvel Studios, Disney, and Ryan Reynolds have agreed that Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are the two ladies that will write the script for “Deadpool 3.” And not only is this the third film in a massively successful superhero franchise, but it’s the first time that Marvel Studios will be working alongside Ryan Reynolds in bringing Deadpool into his new home. Of course, we don’t know the particulars, such as if Deadpool will be part of the MCU, but this is the first concrete evidence that “Deadpool 3” is actually happening. Or at least being developed.
Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, aka The Molyneux Sisters, are probably best known as executive producers and writers on “Bob’s Burgers.” In addition, they’re responsible for the upcoming comedy series, “The Great North,” which was already picked up for a second season before the first aired. On the feature side, their biggest project to date is probably the script for the female-fronted ‘21 Jump Street’ spinoff titled “Jump Street: Now For Her Pleasure.”

As mentioned, this announcement has been a long time coming, as fans have been eagerly anticipating any word about “Deadpool 3.” Interestingly enough, this sequel marks the first film in the series that won’t be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who proved to be crucial in the development and creation of the film version of the character. Ultimately, however, this is Ryan Reynolds’ franchise and if he thinks the Molyneux Sisters are the right folks for the job (as he reportedly led the search for the new writers), then who are we to disagree?
As for the director, there’s no one attached. David Leitch helmed “Deadpool 2” but he has his schedule filled for the next couple of years, so the report claims that it’s unlikely that he will return. Though, Deadline said, the door is open for him, if he wants. But again, it’s likely the third “Deadpool” film will also carry the third director for the franchise.
Obviously, it’s way too early to know when (or even if) “Deadpool 3” will ultimately get made, but the ball has officially begun rolling.
UPDATE: Justin Kroll posted an update on Twitter that says sources believe the film will keep its R-rating that has been a mainstay in the franchise:
