Man, we just rewatched “Coming Home” “Bound for Glory” and “The Last Detail,” in the last month. We’re big, big fans of the free-spirited doob enthusiast/ filmmaker Hal Ashby. Then we (I) ran into Wells and asked him, later on, if he could recommend some good, off-the-beaten path film books. Well he just did. [Hollywood Elsewhere] Some fans we are. This book came out March 20 and we didn’t even know. God, hardcovers are a pain, but we know what we’re buying on Amazon, right….
Here’s an affectionate and loving tribute to Ashby taken from the most-excellent documentary, “A Decade Under The Influence,” which we strongly urge you own. It’s basically the documentary equivalent of, “Easy Riders, Raging Bulls,” but it’s immensely enjoyable and great to see the actors of the time talk about the films rather than read about the stories in Biskind’s semi-controversial book on the denim and sideburns cinema rebels from the ’70s (though that thing is essential reading too). The part with Jon Voight nearly breaking down always brings a little tear to our eye.
