When Justin Simien‘s “Dear White People” premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, no one could have predicted it would be adapted into a Netflix series three years later. Not only that, but the Netflix show has run three seasons, all to positive acclaim from critics, and cemented Simien as a breakthrough talent.
All good things must come to an end, however. “Dear White People Vol. 4” marks the fourth and final season of the TV series, albeit with a twist. This season Simien explores the racial and class tensions at Winchester University as a season-long musical.
Here’s the season’s official synopsis from Netflix:

Set against the backdrop of senior year at Winchester as well as a not-so-distant, post-pandemic future, Dear White People Vol. 4 finds our characters looking back at the most formative (and theatrical) year of their lives. Both an Afro-futuristic and 90s-inspired musical event, Dear White People Vol. 4 is a can’t-miss, farewell experience with one pitch-perfect promise: sometimes the only way to move forward is to throw it back.
The fourth season stars Logan Browning, Brandon P. Bell, Antoinette Robertson, and DeRon Horton. John Patrick Amedori, Ashley Blain Featherson, and Marque Richardson also star. New cast members include Karamo Brown from “Queer Eye” and Rome Flynn from “How To Get Away With Murder.” Longtime cast member Jeremy Tardy does not return for “Vol. 4.”

“Dear White People” has been Simien’s primary creative resource since he began writing the script for the 2014 film back in 2007. He has plenty of upcoming projects to keep him busy after “Vol. 4” premieres, though. “Lando,” a forthcoming Disney+ show about everyone’s favorite pansexual bounty hunter, and a new film adaptation of “The Haunted Mansion,” the popular Disney World ride, are up next for Simien.
