Death Cab For Cutie Write Emo Single For Emo 'New Moon' Movie

Much to the chagrin of some of our audience that just won’t let go, we’ve been saying indie-rock has jumped the shark for months now.

With a few exceptions, the “genre” has become predictable, safe-as-milk, toothless sing-alongs for aging 30-somethings.

The Daily Swarm slyly and tersely commented on this recently in their own way, when they discussed the Pitchfork Best of 00 singles by simply posting an image of vanilla ice cream (and Pitchfork head Ryan Schrieber twittering about, “the list-making never stops!”). We lol’d.

Further proof that your heroes are getting fat and basically cashing in on any old idea presented to them? The plethora of indie rock stars that are making music for the second “Twilight,” film, “New Moon.”

Director Chris Weitz either has good sway or a good budget. First Radiohead disappointed you by contributing a song to this tweemo, bullshit vampire film (in the credits of “Twilight”). Then Radiohead fans were further puzzled when it was announced that Thom Yorke was writing a new song for the film. And now, perhaps rather predictably, milquetoast indie-rockers Death Cab For Cutie have been announced as the band that will pen the first single from the soundtrack (it’s perfect for driving along in your Volvo with your kids in Brooklyn). The sure-to-be whitebread song composed specifically for “New Moon” (man, writing to picture on that one musta been brutal) called, “Meet Me On the Equinox,” will be unveiled Sept. 13 on MTV’s Web site during the Video Music Awards broadcast.

The entire soundtrack is available October 20 on the ChopShop/Atlantic label (just like last time) and will likely include Thom Yorke, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear and Muse. All of them are apparently “in the running,” for inclusion on the disc. [Billboard]
