Whoever “wins” the Cannes Film Festival this year, French actress Léa Seydoux will certainly be up there regardless if she takes home any awards or not. The actress has four films at Cannes, Bruno Dumont‘s “France” in competition, Wes Anderson‘s “The French Dispatch,” ldiko Enyedi‘s “The Story Of My Wife” also in competition, and Arnaud Desplechin‘s latest Cannes premiere, “Deception,” based on a story by the great Philip Roth (let’s not forget, she’s one of two actresses ever to win the Palme d’Or for “Blue Is The Warmest Color,” so everything is always upside for her).

Additionally, it’s the second Desplechin and Seydoux collaboration in a row. She also starred in his last Cannes film “Oh Mercy!” in 2019. The book has haunted Desplechin for years. “Perhaps it’s a book that I will never be able to adapt for the screen, and I know I will regret it for the rest of my days,” he said in 2016. But clearly, he got it made, and a Cannes premiere is yet another feather in the auteur’s cap. Based on Roth’s novel of the same name, the movie centers on an American novelist living for a time in London who converses with his wife, his mistress, and other female characters he may have dreamt up.
