We are still a couple of weeks away from the official announcement of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival lineup. However, reports are surfacing left and right about which films probably will or won’t make the cut. On the Directors’ Fortnight side of things, we now have a good idea which film will likely kick the program off, and it has some major French star power.

Deadline is reporting that “Deerskin,” the latest film from director Quentin Dupieux, will premiere on opening night of Directors’ Fortnight. As for the aforementioned star power, the comedy stars Oscar-winning actor Jean Dujardin and actress Adèle Haenel.
As you might expect from a film from Dupieux, “Deerskin” has a bit of a whacky premise. The film follows a man (Dujardin), who is obsessed with owning a designer deerskin jacket, leading him to spend his life savings and turn to a life of crime. For those not familiar with the filmmaker, Dupieux is probably best known for his breakout film, “Rubber” (about a homicidal car tire). However, he’s recently worked on films like “Keep an Eye Out,” “Wrong,” and “Wrong Cops.”
Dujardin is probably most well-known for his Oscar-winning performance in the 2011 film “The Artist.” However, he’s also appeared in the films “OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies” (and its sequel), “The Monuments Men,” and Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Haenel broke out over a decade ago with her role in the film “Water Lilies.” Recently, the actress has been a bit of a mainstay at Cannes with her last two films “BPM (Beats Per Minute)” and “The Trouble with You” both playing the prestigious festival.
The 2019 Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight begins May 15.
