In Hollywood, chasing dreams can often mean patiently sticking with a project for thirty years until it gets made, like Martin Scoserse did with “Silence.” But sometimes magic happens, and a dream lands right at your feet. Back in September, director Denis Villeneuve shared his hopes for a project he wanted to make one day, while resigning to the fact that it might not ever happen.
“A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt ‘Dune,’ but it’s a long process to get the rights, and I don’t think I will succeed,” he lamented. Well, it looks like Santa Claus brought Villeneuve an early present and maybe a bit of a Christmas miracle.
Variety reports that Villeneuve is in early talks to direct the reboot of “Dune” for Legendary Entertainment, who recently secured the rights to the property. It’s all early days so no word yet on if this will kick off a franchise (my guess is yes) or act as a standalone. All I know is with “Arrival” earning wild acclaim, and “Blade Runner 2049” becoming one of the most anticipated movies of 2017, Villeneuve is like a kid in a sci-fi candy story with “Dune” now on the table. Let’s hope he gets to bring to life the vision he has for Frank Herbert’s books with as much creative freedom as possible.
