British newspaper, The Guardian, has revealed that Dennis Quaid and Julianne Moore are set to star as Bill and Hilary Clinton in a film called “The Special Relationship,” a project reported in the trades in December. Don’t worry, the title isn’t actually referring to the Clintons. Rather the film will explore the relationship between Tony Blair and Bill Clinton during their respective political reigns.
It’s the (presumably) the final film in Peter Morgan’s Blair trilogy that began with the “The Deal” and continued with the “The Queen.”
However, this time, the picture will mark the directorial debut of Morgan who previously gained acclaim with his scripts “The Last King of Scotland”, “The Queen” and “Frost/Nixon.” Regular ‘Morgan’ contributor, Michael Sheen, will naturally reprise his role as Tony Blair from and as will his Cherie Blair, Helen McCroy.
‘Relationships’ will reportedly focus on Tony Blair during the years from when he first rose to power to his first election as Prime Minister. It will apparently feature a Blair who is frustrated at the media circus surrounding Bill Clinton’s infamous Monica Lewinsky scandal with Lewinsky being portrayed in the film only by archived footage. When asked why he restricted the timeline of the film and failed to feature George W. Bush, Morgan responded: “I couldn’t write him with any dignity or elegance… I don’t want to spend the time thinking about him.”
HBO is currently in talks with BBC Films to raise funding for film, because lord knows a film about the relationship between Tony Blair and Bill Clinton is a riveting subject.
